These breeders travel in a truck’s trailer, in the company of their goats, undoubtedly on their way to sell them at one of the many markets in the Yamoussoukro region, political capital of Ivory Coast since 1983. Throughout West Africa the nomadic peoples of the Sahelian countries, particularly the Peuls , traditionally devote themselves to extensive raising of livestock, exporting a major share to the countries along the coast. For the past thirty years, improved roads in the region—especially in Ivory Coast, where the surface area of paved roads has tripled—have greatly contributed to the development of commercial exchanges.
