In northwestern Ivory Coast, in a region covered with shrub savanna and sparse forests, this tree—downed by wind or lightning—was slowly consumed in a bush fire. Started by the local population, these fires can spread through as much as 30 percent of the savanna each year. When the fire has died out, the ashes act as a natural, organic fertilizer, stimulating the quick regeneration of fodder and pasture. In addition, with taller grasses eliminated, the stalking and hunting of game are made easier. Such fires do not cause deforestation in the country—the highest rate in Africa, with 3.1 percent of the forest destroyed each year—unless they are started too late in the dry season. It is then that they can grow into full-blown forest fires and cause severe damage to the tree layer.
