Venice is not one island, but an archipelago of 118 islands separated by 200 canals that are crossed by more than 400 bridges. The Grand Canal, called “the world’s most beautiful street,” forms the city’s main artery, its banks lined by the finest palaces erected by members of the Venetian medieval and Renaissance aristocracy along with the principal churches. Structures such as these, along with St. Mark’s Place, the Doges’ Palace, or the Theater of La Fenice, epitomize the exceptional career of “the Serenissime” Venice. Venice owed its glory above all to its dominance of the sea; since the year 1000, the city sought to impose its maritime power, commercially as well as politically, through a network of trading centres. Maritime powers ruled the world up to the 17th century, when the continental powers came to the fore. Some expect the 21st century to bring the return of the great sea powers, Europe, the United States, and Japan, both for commercial reasons and because of the location of populations close to the seas and oceans.
