Madagascar’s cereal crops and pastures have been chronically destroyed for centuries by invasions of migratory locust (Locusta migratoria) or red locust (Nomadacris septemfasciata). Several miles long and numbering as many as 50 billion insects, the hordes move at a rate of 25 miles (40 km) per day, laying waste to all vegetation in their path. In summer 2004, a large region of Africa from Senegal to Egypt was invaded for several months by swarms of desert locust (Schistocerca gregaria), which ravaged crops and threatened some of the poorest people with famine. To eradicate this scourge, the massive spreading of insecticides by airplane or helicopter is required. However, the cost, the toxicity to humans and the environment, as well as the development of resistance in harmful insects, have shown the limits of this procedure. A recently discovered natural pesticide made from mushrooms might provide an organic method of eliminating these locust swarms.
